Kalpana Chawla Birthday: Kalpana Chawla was born on March 17, 1962, in Karnal, India. She was a groundbreaking astronaut and the first Indian-American woman to go to space. In 1997, she made history as a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Columbia, but sadly, she lost her life in the Columbia disaster on February 1, 2003.

Kalpana Chawla Education

Chawla started her education in Karnal and later earned a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh. In 1982, she moved to the United States, where she completed her Master’s and PhD in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Kalpana Chawla NASA Journey

Her journey with NASA began in 1995 when she joined the Astronaut Corps. In 1997, she made her first spaceflight on STS-87, becoming the first woman from India to travel to space. During this mission, she operated the robotic arm and conducted several experiments.

In 2000, Chawla was chosen for her second space mission, STS-107, which was focused on research and faced many delays. It finally launched on January 16, 2003, to conduct microgravity experiments. Unfortunately, on February 1, the Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart during re-entry, resulting in the loss of all seven crew members, including Chawla.
